Memorial Day 2012

Happy Memorial Day to everyone! Over the last ten months I’ve once again gained new appreciation for the freedoms I enjoy in my homeland as I’ve lived in a land where my access to news is blocked because it may say something derogatory about the government or where I feel like I have to watch what I say in order to travel freely.

My students marvel at the freedom I have to speak my mind in America. One of my students asked me if, in America, we can say whatever we want about the President. I said yes. Then they asked even in Washington, D.C.? Again, I answered yes, even in front of the White House. They were amazed at this. With the news of the Presidential elections everywhere they’ve also asked about voting and some are envious that they don’t have the right to give their input as to who should be representing them.

As much as I love traveling and experiencing new and exciting things, I will always love my homeland, and I hope that I will never take those freedoms for granted. I will do what I can to preserve them, to let others exercise their God-given rights no matter how much I disagree with them, and not let the work of those who sacrificed their lives to secure and protect those freedoms go in vain.

I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day.
