Little Women

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Unabridged; narrated by Barbara Caruso; Recorded Books

I recently finished Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. It is a great book, and for a couple of weeks I’ve found it difficult to put in words why I think that. Even now, this isn’t going to do the story justice.

The novel is enjoyable, well written, and full of engaging characters. Each of them seems so real. I could see people from my life, from my siblings to my friends, classmates and co-workers, in the March sisters, their family, friends and others in the book.

It is also well paced with fast and slow parts of the story all with enough explanation and exposition so you’re not lost, but not too much that you’re overwhelmed. The story also leads through all forms of emotion for the characters, and as a reader you experience several emotions yourself. And they are real deep emotions not sensational cheap emotions like the ones Jo made a few bucks with before realizing she was better than that.

I think that is why I liked Little Women so much. I connected to it on a very real level because of the expert writing and storytelling. I’m not a woman and only have one younger sister, I never lived in Civil War America, and I haven’t ever been a part of a poor high society family, but I still connected with the characters, their struggles and triumphs and the humanity of what was happening.

I recommend Little Women as a must read. It ranks for me among my favorites.
