One of my all-time favorite buildings is the Chinese National Center for the Performing Arts. Floating on a reflection pool and looking like an egg or a globe or an ear of corn or a yin and yang swirl, this structure is captivating. My first visit to Beijing I saw it from the outside and was infatuated. My second trip to Beijing I went inside and fell in love. Now, I’ve listened to beautiful music in the symphony hall, and ….

You can see where I was going with that. I can’t wait to see more!

The symphony hall itself isn’t that big or grand. It is simple and lovely in design. My only complaint is the legroom between rows. Other than that it was sublime. The symphony played some great music, all acoustic letting the hall be the speaker. I was also impressed by the number of kids accompanying a parent to the performance who were mostly very well behaved.

The number of young children in the audience was amazing. It seemed that at least one in four couples or adults had a child or two with them. It was also interesting to see a large percentage of the audience interacting with their electronic device, either a phone or tablet during the concert. The symphony was very good and the sound was excellent in the hall.
