Back to AZ

2016-8-1-san-xavier-del-bac-1-copyOur road trip to Utah took the long route from Dallas, so we could stop in Phoenix to spend time with family and friends. I really enjoyed my time in the Valley of the Sun and throughout Arizona when I lived there.

San Xavier

Our first pit stop in Arizona was the beautiful San Xavier del Bac, the Spanish mission south of Tucson. My sister has visited all of the old missions in California, so this was a treat for her. Most of the California missions are as ornate, and many of them are in ruins. San Xavier’s stunning, restored baroque details inspire anybody who visits.

I’ve visited this mission a few times now. Each time, I notice something I did not see before. It becomes more beautiful with more details with every visit.

What do you do with a three year old in Phoenix in the summer? This is a tough question to ask, but we found a solution with the Stillman-McCormick Railroad Park in Scottsdale. Last year, I took my other niece and nephews there when they were in Arizona for my graduation. It was lots of fun, so this year I took Vivian. She enjoyed the train ride, carousel, and mini trains a lot!

One place that holds my heart more than most in Arizona is the desert home of Frank Lloyd Wright, Taliesin West. I got to know it intimately as an employee of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. I had to go back and visit to see old friends and share the special place with my sister. If you ever find yourself in the Phoenix area, drive up to north Scottsdale for a tour of this architectural masterpiece.

Phoenix Temple

Our last stop on the way out of town was to another of my favorite places in Phoenix, the LDS Phoenix Temple. It is a beautiful building and such an important place. I have felt extreme peace and received answers to prayers while serving in this holy edifice. Mormon or not, I encourage a visit to the gardens of the nearest LDS temple to you. Check out my places page for a map of all of them in the world.
