State Fair of Texas

After my short stint in South Carolina, I made my way to Texas for the last part of my sojourn home. Being autumn, it was time for the State Fair of Texas. My family has gone to the fair every year I can remember at least once. It is a spectacular exhibition of all things Texas and so much more!

My visit to the fair included some firsts for me as well as some favorites. I got to see the animals, try some fair food, and walk through some buildings displaying work from Texas artisans, new cars, and the random shopping spaces that contribute to the character of the fair.

Texas Discovery Gardens

My favorite new experience was a visit to the Texas Discovery Gardens. The State Fair of Texas resides on the historic grounds of Fair Park in Dallas. The fantastic art deco buildings, remnants from the Texas Centennial Exhibition, house most of the attractions and fun. Occupants have changed over the years as newer museums have been built elsewhere in the city, but new occupants have moved in.

The Texas Discovery Gardens took over the original horticulture garden. I really enjoyed my visit to this building. Inside there was an exhibit of Texas bugs, reptiles, and amphibians. The conservatory is now a lush butterfly house. Behind the building is a small collection of beautifully landscaped and planted garden spaces. Also, a small shack houses a collection of Texas snakes.

Performances

A big part of our fair experiences over the years have been the shows and performances. This time was no different. We watched a rodeo-style show in the Pan-am Arena where other times we’ve watched the pig races. We strolled through the children’s boardwalk area and had story time with Mother Goose and got heckled by a puppet vulture. And, to cap off the night, we watched the parade wind through the fair grounds.

My visit to the State Fair of Texas was a fun day with family experiencing a fun Texas tradition.
